Not all that Ms Love tweets is bad. I got lucky and met up with her when the snow was at it's worse in London just before Christmas. I found her to be very creative, intelligent and... well we all have our faults. I won't spill the beans but I will share the tweet and facebook wall posts that made me smile. It's here in my news. Julie Kaye is a talented Artist & innovative Designer based in Leeds, creating artwork that exhibits across the world. Julie's unique style of complimenting digital with handcrafted illustration, is one like no other. The shapes and patterns make up the whole which then draw the viewer into the picture, to then see the level of skill and time spent to create such detail.Currently exhibiting at the Strychnin Gallery in Berlin, I caught up with Julie to discover some more...Q. In your own words, what is it you do?A. I am an artist, and I think to answer this properly I will give you my definition of what I believe art is: Art is a way of communicating thoughts with feelings and imagination in a powerful, engaging language.Each time I embark on a creative process, this is what I aim to do.Q. You currently have your work showing at the Strychnin Gallery in Berlin. Tell us more about the topic and what you were asked to present.A. The Strychnin Gallery's exhibition topic was announced as 'Edge of Love'. Artists were given the freedom to interpret the topic in whatever way they wanted.My piece is entitled 'The Second Gate'.My interpretation of 'Edge of Love' came from researching the garden of Adonis, and the relationship between Adonis and Venus (Aphrodite). This included Venus, her children and the significance of the garden as a place where souls entered and left the earth.The symbolism I used to illustrate the piece is fertility, nurturing, eternity, transformation, gender supremacy for both male and female, rebirth, renewal, emotion, love and desire.Q. Where did your inspiration come from?A. In a way, my inspiration came in a pattern. It began with sketches of fish and snakes - symbolic of rebirth, renewal and many other positive associations.This led to reading one thing after another, and I came to the story of Adonis and Venus. It seemed appropriate to the theme.I was also inspired by a piece of software that uses the computer mouse to randomise a graphic of the universe. Over a two week period, the software created common patterns that were unique to me. Each day I made a recording that lasted between three and seven hours as research.I then recreated this idea with a similar hand movement using a graphite pencil, instead of digitally. The final artwork shows this movement as the protonesque circles and chaotic lines. The movement brings a secondary perspective of the planet Venus.Q. How did your international connections come about?A. I have put my artworks on as many different web networks as possible. You soon have people getting in touch if they like what you do, and empathise with what you create.I have made some amazing friends and strong connections that have led to opportunities like the Strychnin Gallery. Similarly, if I see an artist, gallery, or business that I really like, I always get in touch!Q. What other projects do you currently have on?A. I'm just about to do a virtual world exhibition for the music portal, Pop Lab.I am also apart of the HatchKingdom Museum's 'Oversized & Underpriced' sticker exhibition that is about to display at The Arty Farty Gallery in Cologne, on Saturday 17th April.Q. Tell us about what you think of the Arts scene in Leeds?A. I have struggled to find connections to the Arts scene in Leeds. It's a shame! However, I will be submitting a piece to Leeds Art Gallery's Summer Exhibition. I have spent a lot of time visiting this gallery and to become part of a show there, would be incredible!Q. With this in mind, what does a typical day look like for you?A. My day to day work is very different compared to the exhilaration of exhibiting around the world. However, administration, thinking, research, learning and creating, all contribute to the bigger picture.Q. Having exhibited around the world, where do you see yourself going from here?A. Very simply, onwards and upwards!

Prepare for the unique black and white imagery of Julie Kaye.STAMP: Introduce yourself.Julie: I am an artist who is based in the UK, although I mostly work internationally, having been very fortunate that my art has given me many opportunities in Berlin, New York, and Milan. In order to concentrate on my art career, I recently gave up my full time job. This has allowed me the much needed time to establish myself without any restrictions. It feels as though this is the in-between stage of my rags to riches story.STAMP: What is something you want the world to know about you?Julie: I am grateful for the appreciation shown for my work. The support gives me confidence and helps me stay focused on my goals.STAMP: When did you become interested in art?Julie: I guess like most people, it was the moment I had a colorful storybook read to me as a child. The enjoyment of prodding the images with my little fingers and imagining the characters and places in my mind. Also when I first got the chance to handle brightly colored crayons and get all that praise for scribbling manically on bits of paper or the afore mentioned storybooks. well hey they needed extra bits obviously! However, this initial playtime activity continued and developed into a craving for drawing and that craving was the strongest desire I had. Now I can engage with art on many different levels and the craving to create has changed to just being a natural state of being. The great thing is that Ive never lost the interest or that great feeling and ignition of my imagination and thoughts from experiencing art as a participant or a viewer. It would be a travesty if that interest ever waivered or stopped because it just simply makes me and my environment feel a better place to be in.STAMP: What is your medium of choice and why?Julie: As long as the medium fulfils the needs of the concept, I am happy to adapt what I use. So I go through phases and dare I say trends. At the moment it is ink, graphite and acrylic mixed with photography. However I recently saw a Flemish artists work and it was oil paint on a copper plate. The color was incredibly vibrant and so was the detail in the subjects, it blew me away. So Ill be experimenting and educating myself with this medium. Also Im interested in taking what I currently do and making it 3D if only there were a way not to wear those god awful glasses! I like to mould extreme aspects of different mediums to hopefully create art with a greater degree of originality and a powerful emotional impact.STAMP: Did you study art at an art school? If so which one and in what way did that experience help you as an artist? If not, do you wish you did?Julie: I studied at a few, Batley, Dewsbury and Jacob Kramer in Leeds. Along with these Ive taken many part-time courses and workshops. I believe you push yourself more when you have other competent artists around you. This sparks that age-old human condition..competitiveness. Education provides a healthy dose of it. It focuses you completely on your purpose. For me the important parts of my education in these places were the facilities I got to use. I couldnt afford to have access to them in any other way. As far as what you learnhmmm that has to come from yourself and you can do it without any kind of formal education. I never look at a piece of work and wonder where they were educated. It saddens me when certain people/establishments have an elitist attitude about such things. In fact in most respects it is better not to have had someone telling you what may or may not be the right way to do something, after all art is subjective. So with hindsight I would have just liked the art library key, the student discount for materials and the studio. The teaching bit was a more of a vehicle of inhibition than learning; there was nothing they can teach you technically that couldnt be found in a book or on the Internet. It would be more beneficial of them to nurture confidence and teach good communication skills I think. Having said that it wont stop me dipping my toe back in whenever I feel I need to. Especially when I need a bit of a competitive push.STAMP: How has your experience been as an artist in your country/city of residence? Are there any demographic limitations or advantages?Julie: London has an amazing art scene and in that respect I am very lucky to live in this country. Also Creative Boom, which is based in my city of Leeds, has been very supportive to me. STAMP: As an artist, what are the most common setbacks that youve faced? (Personally, w/medium, w/craft etc)?Julie: Time: Having to sacrifice a lot of my personal life to create the time to do this [art], meant sometimes taking on more than I can handle. Ive been at the mercy of sleep deprivation and stress which are not productive in the long run. So I took a big chance in quitting my day job to give me the time Ive needed and so far it appears to be working for the most part. However, I never had the desire to be a business woman but as Andy Warhol said good business is the best art. I find the business side, the admin and the project managing eats away at my time still. I am trying to master the business of art quickly and enthusiastically.Space: With the art itself I struggle with physical space. I want to have a very large studio away from my home. Lets put it this way, my studio currently has a bed in it.Money: It has been very difficult financially. I pretty much lost everything at one point. I have literally had to start all over again, but that is proving to be a positive in most respects. I now have a greater understanding of the monetary system that is in place in this world, which means I know what happened to many others and me was inevitable. I have to say that all the financial difficulties that Ive ever suffered from have only ever made me more determined to succeed.STAMP: Are there any historical or contemporary artists that you specifically admire?Julie: I admire them all for doing what they love.STAMP: Have you ever shown in galleries? If so, what was the experience like? If not, why?Julie: Yes I have. It is a great experience and a very nerve wracking one too. I think there is a trend that is moving new art away from traditional gallery spaces and into more unconventional settings and of course the street. I like this trend, it makes new art more accessible to people who would not normally enter a gallery to see it. This means artists are working more and more together as collectives and connecting to a wider audience. These are exciting times. The last gallery show I was a part of was Edge of Love at the Strychnin gallery, Berlin in May this year.STAMP: What role do you feel the Internet has on art? Positive or negative?Julie: It has an overwhelmingly positive role for art. It means anyone can now see, show, talk about, learn about and sell their art/illustrations to the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Social networking sites and online activity has yielded me greater exposure than anything else so far. My artwork used to be a guilty pleasure I had outside of my full time job and I happened to put my work online and things just went from strength to strength from there on in. The greatest changes began to occur when I joined Nineteen74.com a few years ago. My artwork received a lot of attention from people loving what I was doing and I made incredible connections with some amazing people. This in turn led to more and more exposure and opportunities. I am so grateful for it.STAMP: Have you ever felt limited or trapped by your style? With so, much pressure on mainstream art, have you felt peer pressured into conforming?Julie: No never.STAMP: After viewing your work, what feeling or thought do you want to leave the viewer with?Julie: I love it. I want it.STAMP: Do you agree with the overall objective of STAMP Magazine? Why or Why Not?Julie: Yes of course. Your magazine supports contemporary art by giving it a new platform to perform on.

I was a very shy child but always got a lot attention for my artwork. So I associated feeling good with art from a very early age. It is at the very core of my self worth, spirituality, emotions and desires. The passion and reward for the dedication to it has grown into an obsession for which Im very grateful.Your art is stunning the style, the colours, the shading. What influence you most?Thank you.The world exists comfortably and uncomfortably numb, half awake and half asleep. It is these opposing forces that constantly influence my work and me.I am at odds with realism and surrealism, so I incorporate both in every piece. The realism is defined in detail from the life that we know to be true which exists in science, human nature and nature itself. Its the world we see, hear and experience with our body. So in my work you will see this as detailed shading, photography and recognizable elements. Where as the surrealism if allowed to flow out spontaneously, is formed in the imagination, and remains the unique property of an undefined source. It is the aspects of life that does not exist in science or nature but still procures to be there in a universe unexplained. Its the world we see, hear and experience with our mind, imagination and emotions whether that is in an unconscious state or otherwise. So in my work, the surreal exists in the outlines, the shapes that are not present in nature or invention but only in my imagination. My compositions on the whole are of a surreal nature.Cologne, Berlin, New York. These are cities you have conducted exhibitions. Tell me more about them.Well I have a big soft spot for Berlin; it is a raw and buzzing city with the most creative community I think in the world right now. The people there are very generous, creative and kind. Considering the recent history that was endured there I fail to see how anyone could not be moved by its past and present.New York is a wild animal. Its a little scary but completely fascinating and powerful. What I found with the artists there was a vibrant intense energy and sense of celebrity.What is Second commerce?Second commerce is best explained here www.secondcommerce.com and is run by Michael Schumann. Michael was instrumental in introducing my work to a wider international audience and giving me the confidence to take my art career to another level.desire - guns without sounds by Julie KayeWhat stands behind the international success you have?I constantly meet the most supportive, proactive and influential people in places like Nineteen74.com, Behance.net, Xing.com, Second Life, Facebook, Twitter and so on and so on. So to sum up what stands behind the international success. it is self promotion and like minded friends I meet through social networking online and the fact that I will drop everything at a moments notice to get on a plane to a foreign country when an opportunity presents itself. no ifs, no buts. Travelling to strange and new places excites me.Have you ever had to sacrifice something in the name of your art?Sleep.Your artworks display diverse topics of everyday life. Is this your source of inspiration?Yes very much so. Books are a great source of inspiration for me as well. Also increasingly visions and dreams I have too.What gives you strength to move forward?I get strength from always having the desire to bring creative thought to life, inspiration from my situations in life whether they are good or bad. Its borderline madness when you consider I could have had an easier life if I had just conformed to the norm. I have a tenacious spirit.You mix different styles and the result is incredible. Do you implement a kind of message in your artworks?Thank you.It is important to me personally as an artist that I have something to say even if it remains unheard, so there is always one message or many messages. I try not to point them out or explain them unless I am pushed to do so. In the moment that anyone looks at a piece of art, even in passing, they and only they can interpret what they see and feel.Your talent creates unique works with beauty woven into them. Do you have a specific piece of art that is your favourite?This piece was a turning point for me and really cemented this new way of working and the direction I intended to go in. It was also part in reference to a friendship I had begun with another artist, David Foox (www.foox-u.com) who I greatly admire. It was part of the DeerBLNproject exhibition shown in the Strychnin gallery Berlin, which was curated by another artist I have a lot of respect for, Christian Rothenhagen (www.christianrothenhagen.com).What do you plan for the future? Should be expecting new exhibitions or new art events?Yes. This year I have a solo show in November, collaboration with David Foox in NYC and the realization of my Carpisa project in October. Hopefully I will be a part of the DHL Hatch sticker museum project too before the year is out. Early next year Ill be part of Loulou Bontemps boutique show in London fashion week, I am doing a talk on my art in Berlin in February and have another solo exhibition in planning stages for May. I am a visually creative creature and a really bad cook. My artwork contains layers of interpretation that are often in direct contrast with each other. Its like having a yes and no within the same piece and I feel this is the direct result of the human condition. We as humans are of course complete contradictions. We make little sense and the result is a reflection of this in my art. So what I like to do is take my thoughts, daily, and let them form some real art.At the moment I am inspired by the extreme. This is because in every aspect of life there exists a complete opposite. In our emotions, in politics, in love and so on and so on and so on. Its as much a part of our existence and understanding as anything else. My work deals with stark contrasts. The more extreme the better. Typically extremes are not seen as feminine but as the male and female psyche which have drawn closer to each other by the advent of technology and societal changes, I feel more comfortable being feminine and extreme. I want to explore this further, not just in my art but also in my life.I am sometimes forced to be inspired by things that I would rather not be. Traumatic real life events close to me. One of my closest friends survived being shot 4 years ago, the officer with her died. It was a very publicised event. I think the trauma of it settled in some of my work. I also witnessed a suicide on the underground and its something I dealt with but it still found its way into my creative thinking for a while. In my art life, events have an outlet even if I would rather they had never existed. On the flip side of this of course there are a great deal good times that influence my work too.Qlix is about emerging talent/concepts within the fashion industry, as an emerging visual artist what contribution(s) do you feel your style of illustration could bring to the fashion industry?I paint the fashion into my art and not the other way around. Art creates its own brief naturally so in that respect I am not an illustrator but an artist. I choose the designers and photographers I like to fit my vision. I want my art to own you when you view it. I want to possess you and control how your eyes move across my artistic skin. And I create with this intention at the core of my expression.I catch myself looking at the Geisha Gun illustration over and over again. What were you thinking about or influenced from when you created this piece?geisha-gun a4 300dpiI was reading articles about women on the front line and I am fascinated by singularity, the joining of man and machine. I am also intrigued by geisha. Here we have woman whose sole purpose is to denote pleasure and entertainment to those who seek it. The gun in this instance is both phallic and representative of her power.The contrasts that exist here are of a women who is both the fighter and the submissive, the body and the machine, nature and man made, present and past.The last two questions of an interview, I always like to lighten things up a bit and ask random, fun questionsas a child did you use to write on the walls?Not on walls. I drew and painted on my wardrobe, it was completely covered. I saved painting on walls for when I became an adult.If you were only allowed to use one type of material to create your art, what would it be and why?Black Ink. I love the control I have over it and its versatility. And by the way I used black ink to paint my wardrobe as a child, so we have been in a serious relationship for a long time.

I always come away from the Games Republic events having learnt something myself."Well-known for their outstanding quality games are Team 17 for the world renowned Worms, Rockstar Leeds for award-winning Grand Theft Auto, and Revolution Software and their key founder Charles Cecil, who quickly became established as Europe's leading adventure game developer for titles that include Broken Sword and Lure of the Temptress.Leeds celebrates film and animation production by everyone working together to host festivals that have included Leeds International Film Festival.
